To me, diversity means a variety of backgrounds, people and perspectives. In my experience, it can bring out better solutions that reach a wider audience, and make the our University, Department, and Division an atmosphere that is more welcoming. Equity means making sure that everyone has equal opportunities, compensation and voice in decision-making, which I think is important in hiring and during everyday operations. When we can make internal processes more equitable and fair, the Division/Department can truly build up the talent it has and can attract a wider range of future hires. Inclusivity is when we implement these values and help make sure that our diverse workforce feels safe, valued and welcomed.

Biography
2013 has seen the institution expand its activities outside its traditional bastion of Mumbai with projects at Vizag, Chandigarh, Sangrur, in addition to the cancer registries that are being setup all over the country. This notwithstanding, there has been a lot of activity at Parel as well, towards our mission of providing the best cancer care to all who seek treatment at the hospital. We are constantly mindful of the fact that the existing infrastructure at the hospital is stretched given the patient load. The majority of our efforts and initiatives are therefore directed at being patient friendly.Towards these goals we augmented our semiprivate bed strength where wait lists were over 6- 8 weeks by converting the old private wards in the main building to semi private accommodation. The private rooms are now exclusively housed in the new Homi Bhabha block. This helps in accommodating more patients while maintain the 60:40 general to private ratio. Our smart card transactions have now been expanded to cover the inpatient services and the general category patients as well. The smart card ensures that all services at the hospital are now cashless, saving time patients spent in long queues. In addition, smart card kiosks are setup all over the outpatient areas to help patients to check balances, expenditures, deposits as well as status of their reports. Patients now also get SMS alerts of their smart card transactions. Towards a green environment our paperless operations have been expanded with no printing of patient reports and pharmacy memos. Patients can however view and prints reports at any time from any location as these are available on the web with restricted access only to the patient and his / her treating clinician.Infrastructure has been augmented with the installation of high value equipment that includes a digital mammography, augmentation of the minimal invasive surgical capabilities, surgical microscopes and anesthesia delivery systems. There has been a major revamp of the hospital Institutional Review Board with space allocated for a dedicated trial pharmacy. In addition, our pediatric ward and outpatient clinic have had a major revamp through a generous philanthropic gesture, making it more child friendly for our young patients. Our service to the Rajiv Gandhi Jeevan Arogya Yojana for patients below the poverty line initiated by Government of Maharashtra has been well appreciated, with the hospital recognized as the leader in the care of cancer patients under this scheme.A financial management system with the help of the ECIL is also fully implemented putting inplace greater accountability and ease in our accounting process. These efforts are reflected in the fact that we have won the best Oncology hospital award by CNBC – ICICI Lombard for the 4th year in running. I place on record the contribution of each and every one of our staff who many a time, work well beyond the call of normal duty.

Assistant Professor of Radiology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine Chicago, IL
As an interventional radiologist, I use image guidance (x-rays, ultrasound, CT, PET, or MRI) to perform minimally invasive procedures. The images are used to direct tiny catheters, wires, and needles in order to diagnose and treat tumors. Using image guidance allows us to perform a wide variety of procedures without making large incisions, leading to shorter recovery times and fewer complications. We can also treat tumors by burning or freezing them (ablation) or clogging the arteries that supply them with different materials (embolization). Other procedures we perform include biopsies, opening an obstructed channel (for example, a vessel, a bile duct, or a ureter), or stopping a bleeding vessel.
I am also trained as a computational biologist, which means I develop, adapt, and apply algorithms from machine learning and information theory to biology. Some of my previous work focused on building mathematical models of biological networks such as gene networks and structural brain networks. Currently I am working on applying these same tools to analyzing genomic data from tumors to better predict and ultimately better tailor treatments to individual patients.
Clinical Interest for Patients I take care of patients with all kinds of bone and soft tissue tumors and cancers, including sarcomas, desmoid tumors, GIST, and PVNS (tenosynovial giant cell tumor). I an an expert not only in standard chemotherapy treatments, but also am active in clinical trials including immunotherapy, and personalized/precision medicine. Care Philosophy I believe that medicine, especially cancer medicine, is best practiced as a partnership between doctors, researchers, and patients. Decisions are always best made as a team effort, taking into account every aspect of a patient’s unique situation! Personal Interests I have recently moved from Miami, Florida to Denver and had to change my hobbies a bit! My husband and I love fishing and boating, and now are getting into exploring the incredible outdoor activities, including hiking, off-roading in our Jeep, learning to ski, and just being outside with our dog! Volunteer Activities I am active with several patient-initiated foundations as an advisory board member, helping to empower patients, families and advocates to advance research to find a cure for sarcomas. Public Speaking Yes I enjoy speaking to patients, families, and physicians in the community to raise awareness of sarcomas and to provide updates on new research including immunotherapy.
